Community Guidelines
In order to keep things friendly within the community, we have certain guidelines that we ask you to adhere to when using this site.
How do I post to a DFG Blog?
For a full description of what DFG Community is and how it works, see
here
.
What can I post to the DFG Blogs?
News, events, debates, items for sale or wanted, services wanted, jobs, collaboration, requests for help or guidance on certain topics.
(Please don’t offer your own services on DFG Blogs – that’s what your own blog is for! Most of us want to make documentaries or be involved in some way – that’s why we’re here after all. Why not use your blog to show off your work or your skills?)
What can’t I post to the DFG Blogs?
In order to prevent your post being rejected, or being delayed, it makes sense to read and follow the guidelines below:
For all DFG blogs, it’s worth stating your location if this is relevant, e.g. for jobs, collaboration, items or services offered or wanted. DFG Community is an international network of documentary filmmakers, and therefore it’s important to state where something is happening. Not everyone lives in London!
Announcements:
This is where you can let t
he community know about news that might be of interest to its members. Maybe your film is being shown on UK television next week, or it’s won an award, or you’ve heard about a new source of funding and, being the altruistic person that you are, think everyone should know about it.
All we ask here is that you tell us where in the world you are, if it’s relevant, such as for television broadcasts.
Jobs:
This is where we’ll post up anything we hear about on the grapevine. Equally, if you’re crewing up for a project, or you’re looking for someone to collaborate with then here is where you post it. There are some important guidelines here:
Categories: Jobs are divided into Paid and Unpaid categories to make it easier for people browsing the site. Please make sure you select the ri
ght category at the bottom of your message, before hitting Post.
Location: Please let us know where the job is based – in the subject line preferably.
If the job is unpaid: Please include details of any expenses or in-kind payment that you can offer;
If the job is paid: Please state how much you’re offering;
How to apply: Self-explanatory, you may think, but we thought it was worth mentioning!
Offered/ Wanted:
Want to sell your PD150? Looking for footage of a cat stuck up a tree? We’d like you to feel free to offer anything and demand anything too! Of course, it does need to relate to documentary – so equipment, your own footage, studio rental, books etc are all welcome here. Similarly, if you are looking for that rare little something (such as someone wh
o knows of a botanical specialist in Cambridge) then this is place to seek it.
One thing though – you cant use this blog to offer yourself as a budding cameraperson, director, producer etc. Like we said earlier – make the most of your own Blog!
Screenings and Events:
We want to know what going on in your area, across the world. So please tell us as much detail as possible, including location, price (if there is one), dates and times. Obvious point here, but events need to be documentary focused (so no football team fixtures please. Unless it’s a DFG Community football team, come to think of it. Interested parti
es please contact kerry@dfgdocs.com).
Q & A:
Try not to repeat the same old question again and again. All DFG blogs are archived and searchable, so look here first to see if your question has been answered. Also, try not to ask questions which are too general (e.g. How do I become a documentary filmmaker) because its just really really annoying and boring. Answers to questions will appear on the DFG blog, so make sure you are concise and helpful and not a waffle monster (rather like these guidelines are becoming).
Debate:
Obvious point here – Debate can get fuelled, so please be kind and considerate to your colleagues, friends, fellow DFG Members and even your enemies. This means no abuse, no defaming etc. etc. We’re talking constructive debate and not a slanderous rant!
Finally, here are some general points:
Your post will be rejected if it contains any libellous or defamatory content. We also ask that you do not post any content that discriminates on the basis of race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality or disability. If there is any room for doubt in your posting, we will always err on the side of caution.
In general, we ask that you consider the rights and background of other DFG Members when posting to this site, including your own blog.
DFG retains the right to reject postings from other training providers, where their services are in direct competition with those offered by DFG.
What can I post to my own Blog?
Pretty much anything that takes your fancy, as you hold liability. We do ask, however, that you consider the rights and background of other DFG Members when posting to this site, including your own blog.
You could use your blog to create your own little corner of the web, to fill with anything you desire. If you’re stuck on what to do with it, here are some suggestions…
An extended online CV, with full details of your work;
A production diary for your next/ current project;
Your experience of the minefield of sales and distribution, including festivals
A place where you can critically engage with documentaries and the documentary process. Wax lyrical about a film you love, rant about a film you hate, and drag other community members into the process!
It doesn’t even have to be anything to do with documentary – we’re just biased. Maybe you’ve always wanted to be a poet, but never found a publisher or maybe you just want somewhere to post up your thoughts – whether idle or profound. This is your space after all.
