  • Christmas in jail

Hi to everyone at DFG, Paul Millwall-Evans my friend and documentary subject will be spending another christmas in jail this year. He's been in nearly three years now, and as he's serving a recommended sentence of three and a half years he could be paroled next august. I thought you'd all be interested in reading his latest letter to me and my wife Tara and I ask you all to maybe spare a thought or some prayers for all the people that will be locked up in jail this christmas, all over the world. Here's his letter. Paul, Tara, Hello mate. Nuff respect for the £30. Me got a pair of trainers from M+M catologue for £14.99, reduced from £29.99, coming on the 4/12/09. Me also got a £15 xmas list with "Selection box, x1 mince pies, six in a box x2. Xmas log x1, pickled onions x2, 5 xmas cards and roasted peanuts 200g x2 packs which we get on 23/12/09. Thanks so much mate. I've got all me pals on my spur ( Landing ) to put all our tables on the landing for xmas dinner so all 16 of us can sit down together for xmas and boxing day meal. It will be nice for all of us to sit together and I've sorted it with the staff. We have all got xmas items from private cash, but some lads won't be so lucky, but that does not matter as they will be welcome on my landing cos they are my pals. It feels so good to be nice and I've got a good rapport with all the lads. I sleep well at night now cos of the way I am. My cell is like Wayland social club during the day, but once me door shuts shuts thats my time. Anyway, me got a letter from Kerry today ( HMP Drake Hall ) And one from Kirsty at HMP Holloway and she sends her love to you and Tara. I'll reply to them before I go to sleep. Did you pass your driving test? I posted Robin a birthday card cos its in two weeks, bless him ( 3rd december ). Anyway mate, you and Tara are my world and I love you both so much. All me love. Paul
  • The cell thief

    Dear DFG posse,

My wife got a letter from my friend and documentary subject Paul Millwall-Evans.  It reveals an interesting aspect of prison life and I thought I'd share it with you all.

    Tara,

I'm writing to you so soon after me last letter cos I've had a cell thief.  He stole a box of PG Tips tea bags, a small jar of coffee and me last ten stamps.  Four other cells were robbed as well.

In the years I've done bird ( prison ) I've never been robbed.  What upsets me is that I only get £9 wages and don't get private cash.  I forgive who ever it is cos he only had to ask.  The other prisoners don't forgive him and are going crazy.  I'll not ask for money cos your on the dole, but could you post me some stamps please.  I'm now gonna lock me door each time I go off the wing but we should not have to live like that.

        Thanks.  Nuff love.  Love Paul.

Ps.  What annoys me is people don't know the old Paul.  Over a year ago I would have gone on a mad mission to find the person and smashed him to bits.  I know its only tea etc but I get that from me wages.  Loads of people who also got cells robbed are going mad and will string the person up.  He only had to ask me and I would have lent it to him.  Its 100/ percent that he is a smack head ( heroin addict ) in debt.

Me gotta close now cos its winding me up and I'm better than that.

        God bless

        Paul

  • How to get photos from your footage

    Hi to all DFG members,

I thought some of you may be interested in learning of a way to get JPEG photos from your digitial video footage.  This is only basic stuff but useful if your just starting out in filmmaking or your already a professional wanting some simplicity.

If you've got a pc, chances are that it came with free microsoft windows 'Movie Maker' software already installed.  This software can only do very simple editing, but what its great for is easily creating JPEG stills photos from your footage.

What you will need first though is a firewire cable, and if your computer hasn't got one already inbuilt you need a firewire port to plug  the cable into.  You can buy both these things together at shops like Jessops or PC World.  When you've got these things you can very simply download your DV or Digital 8 footage into Movie Maker.

Now your are ready to create JPEG photos and it's very simple to do this.  You can go through your footage a frame at a time, so you can capture things like smiles, winks, or anything else in tiny detail.  And it is so simple.  When you've found the frame you want, you simply click on the camera icon and then save the picture.

If your entering your film into festivals chances are they'll want publicity photos, so its good if you can send photos that are taken from the actual footage.  Another great thing is that if your contacting people about your film via e-mail you can send them some photos as attachments.  If you've got good stills it will make people more interested in your film, and you've also got something that you can use in brochures, articles etc about your film.

I'll attach some JPEGs' from some of my own films with this blog so you can get an idea of what JPEGs look like.

Hope this has helped some of you.

  • Greetings from the half mad filmmaker

I recently joined DFG and thought I'd write my first blog to introduce myself.  My name is Paul Warwick and I'm a filmmaker, writer and poet.  As I filmmaker I'd guess that I'm semi-professional.  I've got a city and guilds and a HNC in video production.  I've made quite a few shorts and for more than four years now I've been occaisonally making a documentary about Paul Millwall-Evans who'd served a five year prison sentence for killing his wife and for about nine years after he'd been released he was homeless and had sold The Big Issue all over the country.  His now back in prison serving a three and a half year recommended public protection sentence for stabbing someone.    You can view some of this film by going to www.youtube and typing in their search engine - Sleeping rough.wmv.  I tried to post the link with this post but failed and wiped out everything I'd previously written so now I'm writing this blog for the second time.  Even though I've been making films for quite a long time now, I'm not really a technical person and only know the basics of computers etc.

I'm also a Christian and am married with four children and I've  had schizophrenia since 1992.  I become ill after spending eight years of my youth in prison.

I'm going to try and post a JPEG from my film.  Fingers crossed that I don't lose everything I've written again.

        All the best

        Paul
